Blue Ventures is a science-led social enterprise organisation working with coastal communities to develop transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally led marine conservation. They work where the ocean is vital to local people, cultures and economies, and where there is a fundamental need to support human development.
Blue Ventures recognise the links between poor health, unmet family planning needs, environmental degradation, food insecurity, gender inequality and vulnerability to climate change. Their response to these interconnected challenges is one example of a growing number of integrated "Population-Health-Environment" (PHE) projects. These PHE projects combine reproductive health services with conservation, sustainable resource management and community livelihood initiatives.
The approach of Blue Ventures is similar to the kind of PHE project I am currently working to bring to mainland southern Africa.
